The Olympics of Bubblegum

How big are the bubbles you can blow with bubblegum?

Did you know that the current world record for the world’s biggest bubble blown is 50.8cm in diameter?  It’s about four times the size of an average human head.

Check out the video below to see some of the U.S. Olympic team try to beat the world record in the lead up to the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Your task in this investigation is to design a bubblegum blowing competition for your class.    Remember to work with your teacher to get the correct parent permissions to host this prestigious and audacious event.

As part of your design for the competition, come up with the rules and parameters for the competition.   Think carefully about who will judge the event and how the bubbles blown could be measured in different ways?   Are there any apps that could be used to support you to measure the bubbles with more accuracy?    Is there a limit to the number of pieces of gum an entrant can use?   Are there any performance enhancing substances or devices that are banned for use to ensure that the competition is fair and reasonable?

Have fun and remember that the only place for used bubblegum is in the bin!

Check out the Gumbusters video below to see just how bad the problem is worldwide with people not disposing of their gum in the right place….
